DO YOU KNOW THE ATOMIZATION SYSTEMS FOR PAINTS APPLICATION?

The paint consists in a chemical materials mixture is applied with the spray gun to form a solid film, that has the characteristics of mechanical and chemical resistance, to protect the surface from the aggression of chemical and atmospheric agents.

Each material has its own features in terms of color, aspect, touch and uniformity that define the aesthetic appearance and the final result of the painted support.

The substrates that are more generally subjected to painting treatment are made up of metals, external and internal surfaces of the houses, wood, plastics, paper, etc. The blends used for the surface treatments of the various substrates acquire different terms (paints, varnishes, lacquers, enamels, primers, finishes).

All coating have standard components

  • Polymer, binder o resin
These substances serve to bind the different components together and create a protective film on the substrate during the spray application.
  • Pigment
These fine and solid particles are able to cover the surface with different colors; pigments can also provide corrosion resistance based on their composition.
  • Solvent
This component has the task of facilitating the spreading of the material making the product more fluid.
  • Additives
They within the product help improve application performance and can cause the coating to harden or prevent mold growth

Spray paint is the most effective way to paint all types of objects, walls, structures, constructions and supports. Before starting the painting process, it is essential that the surface of the support has been properly prepared, in this way the coating can be applied with a perfect adhesion. All surfaces, even the smoothest, have a roughness surface, that in case of metal surfaces cleaning can be measured in millesimals of millimeters. (microns)

The drops, dispensed by product atomisation, cover in a homogeneous way all the surface without any accumulations of product.

DO YOU KNOW THE RULES FOR A GOOD ATOMIZATION?

  • Respect always the same distance between the spray nozzle and the surface (30 cm).
  • Keep the painting gun straight and perpendicular, making a 90 ° angle, respect the surface to paint
  • Maintain a correct “rhythm” of product application.

Spray painting equipment must atomise the product at its best to ensure:

  • High quality finish.
  • High transfer efficiency between the paint distributed and the paint deposited on the support.
  • Compatibility between the sprayer and the chemical composition of the product to be used.

The original and performing spray accessories, as airless gun extensions, painting lances, heating systems, tanks with different capacities, allow the operator to carry out all finishing applications.

DIFFERENT & PROFESSIONAL TECHNIQUES FOR BETTER FINISHING

LOW PRESSURE PAINTING 0-7 bar

The paint can be supplied by a “pressurized” tank or by a feed pump through a manual or automatic low pressure gun with a compact design and advanced tecnology to guarantee less over spray and a constant product supply, at a limited maximum discharge pressure.

This type of technology assure a fine atomization, high application performances and less material waste.

Applications Materials
▪ Woodwork furniture

▪ Metal products and machinery

▪ Automotive

▪ Leather

▪ General industrial finishing

▪ Water and solvent based products

▪ Lacquers

AIR ASSISTED AIRLESS PAINTING 60 -120 bar

Air Assisted Airless combines the advantages of conventional spray and airless spraying. The high delivery, high productivity of airless is combined with the high quality finishing of low pressure air spray obtaining the perfect combination of high delivery, spray fan control and finishing.

Product is delivered to the gun at lower pressure than traditional airless and is partially atomized through a small nozzle. A too high air pressure could cause a fan distortion.

This finishing technique allows:

– Material savings

– Reduction of air consumption

– Fast atomization of high viscosity materials

– Less overspray

It is always recommended to use the lowest pressure necessary to obtain a better atomization and to reach the maximum transfer efficiency.

▪ HIGH PRESSURE PAINTING > 120 bar

The product, thanks a high pressure technology, passes through the spraying nozzle, made of tungsten carbide. When the product goes in contact with atmosphere it will be broken in small drops and it will generate a uniform spray pattern, that ensures an optimum object coverage from the first spray pass.

This finishing treatment is mainly requested when it is necessary to spray large surfaces in a less time; it is also possible to use one sprayer for two applicators.

Applications Materials
▪ Ship building and Marine

▪ Pipe and tank coating

▪ Wind power towers

▪ Bridges and steel fabrication

▪ Construction and mining machinery

SELF-CLEANING AIRLESS PAINT NOZZLES

A LITTLE ACCESSORY WITH A BASIC IMPORTANCE!

The airless nozzle has a tungsten carbide insert that it is cut with high precision to obtain a calibrate hole, it will assure the right paint quantity and the correct spraying fan.

  • Designed to produce a constant spray pattern over time without overspray
  • Available in several sizes from 19-10 to 51-80.

The high pressure nozzle is identified by the numbers printed in relief on it.Ex. Airless tip size 19-40

The number 19 indicates the diameter of the product pass, expressed in millesimals of an inch , this dimension determines the quantity of paint that flows through the nozzle. The effective flow capacity depends by the spray pressure and the paint used. A high pressure implies a great flow capacity, whereas a thicker paint corresponds to a lower flow capacity.

The number 40 indicates the spray angle.

The ideal and constant distance from the surface is 25/30 cm

HOW TO OBTAIN THE BEST FINISH? CHOOSE THE RIGHT SPRAY NOZZLE!

Choosing the correct nozzle size is basic to obtain the better spraying, so it is necessary to consider the kind of project you have to do.

Airless tip size 11- 20 the spray angle decreases the amount of paint deposited increases

Airless tip size 11- 40 the spray angle increases the amount of paint deposited decreases

Each painting sprayer has a maximum flow capacity and a max nozzle size than the one your equipment supports must never be used, use small tip size when applying thinn materials and a large tip size for thick products.

Paints and coatings contain an solid in different percentages:

  • Low Solids 20-30% solids as lacquers, stain, enamels, fixatives, inks…
Reccomended nozzle size from 11-20 to13-60
  • Medium solids 30-50% solids as acrylic paints, emulsions, exterior latex…Reccomended nozzle size from 15-20 to 21-60
  • High Solids up to 100% solids as fillers, elastomers, plaster, mastics…

Reccomended nozzle size from 23-20 to 51-80

The types of materials determines the size of the nozzle. If an applicator use a wide range of materials, it is important to consider HAVING an airless sprayer suitable for different needs.

Selecting the correct spray nozzle means:

  • Saving time and material
  • Less replacements
  • Reduced workload, fewer coats, less overspray
  • Improved finishing quality and increased productivity
  • The nozzle size and the pressure determine the material flow rate
  • Each sprayer has its range of tips based on its power and products able to spray
  • The product use must suitable for an airless application.

WHEN DO YOU NEED TO REPLACE YOUR AIRLESS PAINT NOZZLE?

The airless nozzles are made of tungsten carbide, a high-strength hard metal, but the pressure and abrasiveness of the paint, especially when the solids content is high, accelerate the hole wear where the product passes. Often a paint nozzle continues to work, but it doesn’t always mean that it is doing its job in the best way.

A worn nozzle will have:

  • a larger hole waste of material due to increased product leak
  • greater overspray excessive nebulization of the product
  • reduced fan width more time to complete the application, more coats and costs

Based on the applicators experience, a nozzle generally tends to exhaust its spraying effectiveness after having dispensed from 300 to 500 liters of product; such values can drastically decrease if the paint is very abrasive, the sprayer is used at a high pressure and the surface to be covered is really extended.

The wear of the tip is evident by comparing the spray quality with a new nozzle: the worn tip covers a smaller area and it wastes more paint because the hole size increases and the fan width decreases. It is more convenient for the applicator to replace the nozzle than to buy larger quantities of product to finish his project.

The basic rule is to replace a tip when the starting size of the fan is reduced by 20% – 25% to continue to ensure the ideal spray pattern and the quality finishing.

The airless nozzle endurance depends from the material, but it is possible to increase its durability if the sprayer works at its lowest pressure with a good atomization.

HOW TO AVOID THE MACHINE TO STOP WORKING?

THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANING YOUR SPRAYER!

Have you finished spraying for today?

Don’t forget to clean your sprayer with a compatible liquid with the material used to spray, to avoid that the residuals of material dries inside the pump, in its components and accessories.

This is an easy and fast operation to assure you that the next day you will have the best performance without any complications, because in several cases it is really difficult remove the dried paint.

It is also basic cleaning the tip and the gun filter in the handle of the gun. The filter retains the impurities of the product that could block the exit of the materials. It is important choosing the filter based on the type of products.

Normally for a little size nozzle the filter has a fine mesh and otherwise if the size is big the mesh has to be a large mesh.

Another important aspect, that an expert painter knows, is that it is essential to have more spare parts and original accessories with him, like different size nozzles, filters, gun or extension.

It is always better to purchase not only one type of accessory, because this inattention could cause a machine downtime!

The right quantity of accessories and the cleaning operation assure the respect of the deadlines project, total client satisfaction and a good reputation about your work as a professional painter.

SPRAY PAINTING LANCE, HOW TO CHOOSE THEM?

LARIUS high pressure pole guns help you spraying in all inaccessible areas with a professional result!

Choosing the right size of our PLA airless spray lance for your project is fast and simple!

Perform these following calculations:

  1. Ceiling height to be painted – Operator height = LENGH
  2. Length – 30 cm (optimal distance from the surface) = THE BETTER PLA SIZE TO USE

The swivel on the PLA where the airless nozzle is connected, allows to mantain an angle of 90° respect the surface that has to be painted and it will avoid unwanted dripping of color.

USEFUL ADVICE

For floors finishing we recommend to use an airless lance with an extension from 30 cm to 60 cm.

HAVE YOU FINISHED WORKING, BUT YOUR GUN DOES NOT STOP SPRAYING?

Durability and efficiency of a spray gun are determined by different factors:

  • Quality of its components
  • Product used during the spraying application
  • Level of its wear
  • Maintenance

Once the trigger is released, if the gun continues spraying the material, maybe there is dried material inside, it could form a block, so the gun can’t close.

The first step is making an accurate cleaning of the body gun and its parts, if the problem persists the better choice is to contact one of LARIUS authorized center for a professional revision to solve the inconvenience.

It is always recommend to clean the machine when the spraying application is finished.

TWO APPLICATORS AND ONE AIRLESS DEVICE?

IT IS POSSIBLE ONLY WITH A BIG SPRAYER!

The second gun kit, mounted on a single airless spray machine, allows you to speed up the painting operations to finish the job earlier, thanks to the different lengths of the high pressure hoses the operator moves freely in the job area.

It is fast and easy set up this device for two airless spray gun use at the same time, but the first requirement is the power of the airless sprayer, because small machines are not able to support a double workload, a big high pressure pump is also capable to spray a wide range of vernishes and coating.

The correct airless spraying package to apply this device are Thor electric piston airless pump and Giotto electric diaphgram airless pump.

USEFUL ADVICES

  • The airless nozzle determines the fluid flowand the spray pattern , it is important to consult the product data sheet.
  • Use the appropriate size filters considering the material that has to be sprayed.

PRATICAL ADVICES TO USE BETTER YOUR AIRLESS SPRAYER!

  • Product data sheet is basic for having the best airless machine performance.
The material determines the righ size of tip and gun filter to avoid impurities that could cause a spray block. More thick will be the product and more large will be the mesh filter.
  • Security is very important. At first step read the operation manual pumps, adopt all safety precautions and wear protective equipment required by law as mask, glass, gloves and a pair of safety shoes.
  • Having an optimal spray pattern is the first step, so it is important doing a spray test before spraying directly onto the job area
  • Respect always the same distance between the spray nozzle and the surface (30 cm) to avoid a rarefied spray pattern and an overspray or a product dripping effect caused by a short distance.
  • Keep the painting gun straight and perpendicular, making a 90 ° angle, respect the surface to paint
  • Press the trigger only after start moving your hand from right to left with the same rhythm of Application.

The no optimal spray pattern indicates that product is not completely atomized:

  • Adjusting the pressure
    > pressure = > flow rate of material
The pressure value determines the level of product atomized.
  • Dilute the product to obtain a good level of viscosity, in this way material output will be easier.
  • Check the state of wear nozzle
  • Start to paint from the perimeter areas for having an uniform coverage, spraying on angles and boards to pass to big surface maintain the same rhythm of product application.
  • With an overlapping technique start painting with regular passes on the perimeter areas, on the angles and the corners to pass on big surfaces. The coat thickness determines the quality coverage.

The nozzle jams continuously?

  • Use a thinner filter
  • Use a larger nozzle

Too much product?

  • Reduce the size of the hole
  • Increase the spray range
  • Reduce the pressure

Little product?

  • Decrease the size of the hole
  • Reduce the spray range

  • At the end of the work release the trigger of the gun before stopping your hand, so you won’t obtain a surface with stains.
  • Cleaning the sprayer with a compatible liquid with the material used to spray, so you will avoid that the residuals of material dries inside the pump, in its components and accessories.
